Featured Artist Interview | Ren Nunez

Meet the Artist

Ren Nunez is an Arizona based artist who’s currently splitting his time between two separate studio locations, as the Ink Therapy Tattoo (studio) expands it’s horizons.

He was originally only working for the Glendale, AZ shop, but when the owners opened their second location, they asked Nunez if he would come along to help get the ball rolling. He happily obliged, and now travels to the other location in Cave Creek, AZ as well.

Nunez commutes an hour each way to work a shift at Cave Creek, but supporting the second branch as it’s finding its footing is worth his time. He appreciates the variation to his daily routine, and of course, being a helpful member of the team.

The content of his tattoos varies by client, but his unique illustrative style acts as a through line present in all his works. He works in a wide spectrum to accommodate anyone who commissions him; from portraiture work and detailed animal images, to cartoon and comic styles, or even touch-ups and cover-ups.

“There’s gotta be more to life!”

Before Nunez began his career in tattooing, he was working for the family business. Later, he was hustling his way up the ranks at a hardware store. Though he’d had an interest in art and been drawing all his life, his work had been mostly hard physical labor.

These jobs left him very little time for creativity, and it caused Nunez a great deal of frustration. He recalls feeling constantly irritable, and a painful awareness of the passage of time. Working such a monotonous corporate job was slowly grinding away at his spirit.

” The craziest part is when you go from being angry and knowing what day of the week it is, to like… now you could ask me what day of the week it is and I’d have to check.”

-Ren Nunez

A message from God?

For Nunez, it was a massive relief to start working in a field that doubles as his creative outlet. It’s even fulfilled his childhood dream of drawing on people for a living.

Since he’s made the career switch, his overall happiness increased tremendously. Nunez’s schedule is still very busy, but tattooing gives him more agency as far as how he manages his time. It’s an intense job, but he still has more time to spend with his family now.

The most remarkable part of Nunez’s journey into the world of tattooing actually occurred while he was still working at the hardware store. He said the day something changed for him was rather mundane, other than his foul mood.

It was a busy day at the hardware store when he was approached by a customer on the service floor. He was on his way to his lunch break, but he took the time to address the man who stopped him anyway, thinking he had a question or complaint.

But the conversation took a sharp turn, and unexpectedly the customer announced that he had a message for him. He asked that no matter which religion or beliefs he held that he just hear him out.

To paraphrase his message, he said Nunez had a talent that he’d put on the back burner in his life, but that it was time to make it a priority again.

He said the only way he would ever be able to make a living while maintaining a sense of joy would be to pursue his true passion, focusing all his energy on honing his talent.

The conversation shook Nunez, and he recommitted himself to art that same evening. Soon after, he was headed back to Arizona to take his chances with a career in tattooing. Since he’d completed his apprenticeship already, he was free to jump right back into the craft, picking up exactly where he’d left off.

Onwards and Upwards

In 2023, his goal is expanding his clientele at the Cave Creek location. He’ll be taking clients by appointment and is currently booking about a month in advance, so if you’re looking to get your own ink from Nunez, be sure to think ahead!

00:32.38
inkedway
Um, me hear me Okay, cool. Well do you want to just get started.

00:37.33
Ren Nunez
Take Yeah yeah, as long as you can hear me good. It’s going pretty good, pretty busy just getting ready the edge of the shop.

00:41.28
inkedway
Um, yeah, cool positive day going was your morning 1

00:49.25
inkedway
Um, nice what I having then.

00:55.43
Ren Nunez
Around 2 Usually when I start ah depends on the shot because I’m in between 2 locations. So follow up at our northern location. It’s more during the day and then if I’m in our more central.

00:58.44
inkedway
Um, oh nice, you work like regular hours.

01:14.27
Ren Nunez
Phoenix location. It’s evening times to work night times over there. So I usually try to work like a 2 to eleven. Which yeah yeah, it’s been pretty difficult to try to balance the two. But I think.

01:19.43
inkedway
Um, okay, that’s kind of a crazy schedule like working at 2 different shops is that difficult for you.

01:33.33
Ren Nunez
Trying to get a better grasp on it and come 2023 next year to start couple weeks here. We’ll get better hours and adjustments. It’s just all about adjusting and kind of changing to that adjustment. So gotta make it work I’ve got.

01:45.31
inkedway
Um, yeah, how’d you end up.

01:52.89
Ren Nunez
What that? Um, so my mentor he’s the Cyrus slay he owns ek therapy with his brother and so when I had started my apprenticeship I’ve been with them I’ve known them and been around them for the last ten years so

01:54.40
inkedway
Um, how do you end up working for Chief flops at once.

02:12.40
Ren Nunez
Just sticking with them and the opportunity came where they got another shop up north because we’re here in Arizona it’s called King Creek Arizona and so he just asked me if I wanted to be 1 of the artists that went with them to help him open it up and get it running I was like yeah so that’s I ended it up there. Yeah.

02:27.24
inkedway
That grade.

02:32.34
Ren Nunez
Now it’s it’s pure airzon and then kid Creek Arizona yeah Yeah so it’s the essentially located one. It’s not a far drive at all. But the K Creek one it’s about an hour north.

02:37.63
inkedway
Um, and is it a far drawn. You have to like commute to one or the other place.

02:51.77
Ren Nunez
Us So but but it’s kind of worth it. Yeah, but I mean it’s kind of worth it because a scenery difference and I don’t know it’s a different clientele.

02:52.87
inkedway
Um, let’s got an eagle here.

03:05.45
inkedway
Um, Bush bird what would you say the difference between the 2 cliente.

03:10.93
Ren Nunez
Um, up there. It’s more like higher end clientele if you know what I mean like you’re in California sod be I don’t know what’s what’s up to it’s up to bay from you guys in San Diego that really rits you place.

03:29.82
Ren Nunez
Trying to it’d be like a newport. You know how newports kind of like a higher end. It’d feel like a that’s what it face. It’s like a touristy super high end scottsda kind of area. Such’s just that kind of clientele. But.

03:30.76
inkedway
Um, was that.

03:40.85
inkedway
Um, yeah, um.

03:46.47
Ren Nunez
I mean and then the Peoria is more of just like your normal every day kind of the cream of the crop you know because it’s essentially located so that’s kind of the one where you get a little bit of everything.

04:00.42
inkedway
Um, do you have a preference for for 1 type of clientele over the other.

04:06.11
Ren Nunez
Um, I mean I don’t know I just I I want to kind of tattoo. Everybody. So I do like the area more of the one that’s more north because it’s like more woodsy and it’s you know the elevation’s a little higher and I like the. You know the kind of scenery better. But I mean it’s all Business. So I’m just trying to expand my business as much as I can so I mean clients clients try to. Whoever I can so that’s the reason I also agreed to do 2 different locations I figured I had more opportunity to you know spread my name and get my name out there and my art and all that stuff. So.

04:43.98
inkedway
Um, totally how’d you get started in the fields just in general.

04:50.34
Ren Nunez
Tattooing I was my cousin I’ve been an artist my whole life and my cousin bought me a tattoo machine and he was like you’re gonna tattoo me because you know how to do art so it’d be pretty easy to figure out to tattoo and so I tattooed him in my kitchen and then from there I just started tattooing myself. Um, like my legs and stuff I really know what I was doing and I was getting tattooed by the time at an artist at ek therapy and that artist saw my work and he’s like hey original those tattooed and I was like I am she was like what che me wanted tatoon. Like I mean I never even thought of it. He was like well I mean you got some talent so you want to learn the right way and basically that’s how I got my end with the apprenticeship and then 1 thing led to another and I basically ended up doing a three year three and half year apprenticeship under Cyrus.

05:41.67
inkedway
Um, that’s awesome it So all fell into your lap. It’s like written in the stars kind of um.

05:44.92
Ren Nunez
So yeah, yeah, it’s yeah, it’s wild how it all worked out but my bad. Yeah, it’s definitely been a blessing.. He’s been a good guide his brother too. So. Ah, like it wouldn’t change it for the world. Oh yeah, we have ah so on my side of the family.. There’s a family business.

06:06.30
inkedway
You have a plan before you go tattooing like was your life headed in a different direction.

06:20.10
Ren Nunez
Glass business. They do like a commercial and residential glass. So I worked there my whole life basically and then I don’t know it’s just one of those things worked there with my dad and my brothers so I just kind of figured you know to stay there forever then take over the family business one day. But. I mean I just felt like there’s something more to life I I was always just angry I was like there’s gotta to be more to work in this 9 to 5 and then honestly it wasn’t until I started art like being able to do tattoos and create art every single day that were else like okay this is this is what I’m supposed. This is what you know what? I mean. Cause everything else. It seemed like it was so hard like it I had to try so hard at it. You know like tattooing and art. It’s just ah yeah I have to try hard. But it’s like it comes so like you know my whole life. It just always comes so natural to me. So. Yeah I was definitely not supposed to be doing this and then like I said it just kind of fell into my lap and then 1 thing led to another decided to full send it on the tattooing. Yeah, then your page.

07:22.38
inkedway
Um, Kelly did your family or is or anything have opinions about that. Um.

07:31.47
Ren Nunez
Ah, yeah, so like I my my side of the family doesn’t really support. It. My parents don’t but my ah my in-laws. My wife’s side of the family they they support it really It’s it’s crazy how much they support it because me and my wife have been together since we were in high school. And I remember being in high school and getting my first tattoos and her dad seeing you know my in-laws her dad and her and her mom seeing him and he was just like ah my head you know he’s just never been a fan of tattoos. He’s ah you know they’re pretty both straight edge when it comes to that and it’s been awesome to see them. Because just this last year I came back, you know and I had to make a decision I went to California for a year and I was doing the whole lows thing and to make a decision either. You know, stick with those go the family business or you know take the plunge and just full send it on tattooing here in Arizona and try to build the clientele. And yeah, that’s what I just ended up doing just decided. You know they they they were like we support you 100 % like there’s no way you can be this talented and not like jump into this and I was like what the Hank you guys are the ones I never even like tattoos to begin with and they ended up being along with my wife like my biggest supporters.

08:38.52
inkedway
Um.

08:44.10
inkedway
Um.

08:47.16
Ren Nunez
Wild. Yeah, yeah, yeah, what? yeah Mustley muster ever. Oh is it.

08:49.20
inkedway
Um, that is wild I love that for you though, like but a nice feeling to have that backing if you have anyone else who like ah oh I’m sorry, there’s a bit of a lag you go ahead. 2.

09:07.20
Ren Nunez
Oh you’re you were saying drive. Anybody else that I didn’t hear the lock. Um, yeah, basically most most of a lot of everybody else I would say I was ah you know they all basically say they support it a lot of people.

09:11.24
inkedway
Um I was just asking you know about the other support system.

09:26.43
Ren Nunez
You know they they realize how difficult it is doing the whole working for yourself thing especially going from somewhere like I said like a year ago I was literally a inside law and garden salesmore manager from lows like the biggest lows in you know palm dahard California so.

09:42.48
inkedway
Um.

09:45.85
Ren Nunez
I don’t know it’s just for a good while but to you to be here doing this full time nonetheless I like 2 shops that are pretty big. You know, pretty? Ah well-known shops here in Arizona but.

09:59.14
inkedway
Um, need help.

10:01.54
Ren Nunez
Yeah I would say basically everybody a.

10:07.20
inkedway
Um, can you tell me a little about how you felt before you decided to go all in on this like can you tell me a little bit about the experience of having to commit to something that was so you know, ah.

10:19.74
Ren Nunez
Um, mind boggling it’s I would say I was it was basically just nerves nervous as hell because like I said it I got a wife and kids so to be going from. You know the breadwinner set income.

10:24.78
inkedway
Yeah, so so and um.

10:39.77
Ren Nunez
You know, always got this. You know, guaranteed paychecks and now it’s just like well I hope someone shows up the first day to get a tattoo because otherwise I don’t know what to tell you guys like I don’t know how you know so it’s like but the way that this industry works and the way that. You know both my you know my mentor and his brother told me they were like it’s one of those things where we can’t guarantee you success but like we’ve seen where you’re coming from and like the next step is literally you just have to go all and like you just you have to commit 100 % because like even during my apprenticeship. I would still have the family business on the backboard I would try to work the family business 9 to 5 and then on my time off in the family business at night I would go to the tattoo shop and I would put in hours or like on the weekend and it was just like destroying my family time because like I would literally never i’ be either at the you know I work working my job. Or um I would be you know at the shop trying to do this apprenticeship and so they were just like if you’re gonna work. You know do this and they watched me like juggle that for three and a half years so they were like when I came back last year they were like we got a spot for you. You know we’re ready for you to come back. But you gotta do it. This has gotta be the only thing like it’s gotta be full sound like you’re doing this 100% all the way nothing else on the back burner and it basically has to be because if you don’t like if you’re not all in on this.

12:07.38
Ren Nunez
And those days and those weeks start coming where you’re not getting walk-ins and you start to be like oh crap I haven’t tattooed in five six seven days that’s where the people will start falling back on that you know well I have a part time job. What. Instead of like diving even further into their art and like producing and like marketing and networking and the things you need to be doing to growing your business which is I don’t know like I feel like I like have made fun a lot of times too because like we’re a newer age of tattoo artists. You know what? I mean like I’m the new. Generation. We’re not the ones that have been tattooing for 1825 years like they grew up in a completely different generation of tattooing and it’s wild because like like I said my apprenticeship I did it so longer I did it ten years ago and I did my apprenticeship and then i. Stepped out of the industry completely and I got into business more like running small businesses running like how the corporate world works and low. So I really dove headfirst into like the business aspect of like business in general and I feel like a lot of like you know like I said the older school tattoo artists and stuff.

13:04.60
inkedway
You.

13:10.87
Ren Nunez
They were kind of bred in the industry. You know what? I mean they don’t know anything other than tattooing they don’t have any like customer service sense as far as like the general population would be used to like you go into Walmart you go to Cbs you’re expecting like a certain kind of you know customer service as ah as a customer That’s where like I feel like a lot of times you go to these old school tattoo shops and they’re like not use a dick like that artist was you know, use me and he was like they kind of like they laughed Andy impression off and it’s because of that mindset. But I don’t know I feel like I just learned the business side of things and then I I came back and I was like well hey here’s an industry you know tattooing.

13:35.95
inkedway
Um.

13:48.80
Ren Nunez
And essentially you are the business. The artist is the business. Your product is your tattoos or your art so you have to like you know Market Network like run yourself as a business so I just look at it more as a business side of things. Instead of trying to be like this next Ek Master like the best f freaking like Mo like my crap’s better than yours I’m the best tattoo artist in arizo like I don’t I don’t sit there and talk about how amazing of an artist I am because like. You know, like look at my work my work speaks for itself I’d rather you just like see that you know I put my work out there for people to see I put reviews of like customer interactions I have you know, just so you can see that I’d rather just focus on like you know, growing the business which is like getting you know my work out there. Been able to share my work with with the public it. What the um, a.

14:40.56
inkedway
Um, was that like the most challenging part of it for you.

14:49.20
inkedway
Um, getting to know the business aspect and you know finding the balance between your service and the traditions of art.

14:56.10
Ren Nunez
I mean kind of like to be honest, it wasn’t until I worked at you know, low that I really had I had some really good mentors and the team at the lows I was working at sorry about that that the whole job there.

15:08.22
inkedway
Um, that’s okay, um.

15:14.82
Ren Nunez
Is customer service. So like the the way I ended up at those was I didn’t have a job when we moved out to California and I needed a job didn’t really have like a resume because all I had done before was a tattoo apprenticeship and worked for a family business. So I mean in the corporate world. That’s not really much under resume like they don’t care like who you worked for your mom and pop shop here and you did it.

15:34.55
inkedway
Um.

15:34.86
Ren Nunez
Apprenticeship like that means nothing to us so they hired me as like a seasonal part time employee did that for a couple weeks and you know just did the whole my mindset’s always been I was always raised with the just work hard like work harder hard work like just wake up, you know. Raised on a ranch farm sun up sundown feed animals busster your eyes constantly and hard work produces results right? So just did that worked my way up into management and then once you get into like so supervisor management. That’s all the training is on customer service especially at a retail store like lows so you really get to a. Dive headfirs and then dealing with all kinds of customers, especially like in the l a you know out in Lancaster Palm de and in California you know the kind of clients we deal with and our store was like the second busiest in California so we would get like you know 1502000 people through their day like it was crazy. But.

16:18.34
inkedway
Um, and um.

16:31.98
Ren Nunez
There I would say that’s where I really even my mentor in the tattoo world Cyrus. He even said like the best thing I could have ever done was left the industry completely when I finished my apprenticeship went and got some business training and then came back and just applied that to what I was doing. Yeah I mean because like. Without and what I worked it was low is basically that taught me how to like you’re in every variable on on how a business actually runs and how it should you know networking marketing like all that stuff that goes into like exactly how important networking and marketing is with customers and then the customer service to like make sure you know. Not only are you giving them a product but you’re giving them like a whole experience. You know what? I’m saying like I don’t want you to just come and that’s like another thing my mentor has pushed on me. That’s why we call our shop ink therapy. It’s like a whole therapy session. Whereas you’re not just coming in to have some rude like dude slap some pr work on you for however, much money you’re trying to like he’s trying to pawn out of you and then kick you out the door like we want the whole experience. You know to be you know part of the package. So I think you’d probably.

17:23.69
inkedway
Um.

17:40.36
Ren Nunez
Answer the question be lows is where I really learned the customer service side and like how to that’s where I kind of learned how to like or I kind of started brainstorming on how to apply this to tattooing because there I met a guy that was a tattoo artist. You know he’d do it on the side. And just talking he was like bro what you doing working here like he was like why aren’t you tattooing he was like you know I choke some of my work. He’s like everybody on other like why are you working at Thes like what are you doing with your life and so I was like all right started thinking about it and that’s where I really started applying it.

18:00.33
inkedway
Are.

18:07.46
inkedway
Um.

18:15.77
Ren Nunez
Um, yeah, so I was um.

18:18.99
inkedway
Um, so you ah you told me in our messages that um you had like some kind of crazy story.

18:32.47
Ren Nunez
I was like I said I had put tattooing completely on the backburner I was working at the business family business or whatever and I was in those last year and like I said I kept having people say you know, um, what are you doing working here like you shouldn’t be working here. Well I had this one instance where I had this man he was like hey can I stop. You have. You know he’s like I need to tell you something I was like yeah sure like you know it’s being a man you know at a supervisor you can’t really just like brush people like I know I’ve won my way to break because I think I was on my way to lunch break but I was like yeah man I’ll listen and so you was like. Like I don’t know what you believe in he was like I don’t know a religion you believe in but he was like I just got a message for you I’m like okay I didn like come on like what’s your thing and he was like um you you’re really talented in something that you’ve put on the back burner and it’s one of the only things that has brought you like happiness your whole life. And instantly I was like art cause like I like I said I’ve always done art like it’s always been since like I think I was 3 my mom I drew a picture of like the news helicopter and she sent it to them and then they like put it in the newspaper and sent me back a picture of the real house I was like. I’ve always done art. You know what? I mean it’s always been art school and it’s always been like the 1 thing where like honestly like when I’m painting your drawings like when I’m what I get. It’s like when I’m having the most fun or when I’m like in my zen.

19:51.80
Ren Nunez
And so he was telling me this and I was like ah it’s been art because I put art on the backburner to help the family business to like basically chase money and he was like though he was like you. You’re extremely talented in something you put it on the backburner. He was like the only way. To have more money than you know what to do with and be the happiest you’ve ever been is he was like you need to pick up what you put on that back burner and do what actually makes you happy and I was like okay until then I gave me chills and then that guy went home. And I drew a picture I was because I hadn’t drawn I hadn’t done anything with art since I had moved like you know and I mean like I gave it up completely because I was kind of mad at myself. You know like I did this whole entire apprenticeship I literally like worked my ass off for 3 three and a half years to like get this and then I got to the point where I was. You know they gave me my room. They gave me like here. You go your professional you know vices tattoo arts and I basically was like got thanks. But no thanks I my go try back. The family business. You know like I was upset with myself so I was like completely just threw it all away when i. Walked away from it and so I went home and I was like I’m drawing so I drew a picture I think like an I or something and then I just started drawing and then 1 thing led to another that dude’s message definitely stuck with me and I was like I need to get back to Arizona because I kept having I kept having like dreams of being back in ink therapy.

21:15.13
Ren Nunez
Know what I mean cause I spent so much time there I didn’t I didn’t know what the dreams meant I thought I was getting tattooed by like my mentor and so I was like something tells me I just need to go back into the shop like something tells me like hit these guys’ upside message I’m like like hey you guys do good like everything. Okay, like everyone’s healthy and they’re like no yeah, we’re good. We’ve been super busy. Like oh I’m moving back torizona and they’re like oh really, they’re like what what are you doing and then I was like I I know it and so like I moved back and hadn’t really messaged them when I had started tattooing out of my my house I had here or like people you know I would go over to people’s houses and I tattoo them there. Just to get back into it because I like I’m saying like tattooing is I don’t know it’s amazing like painting’s really fun that drawing’s really fun, but like tattooing is like another level of like I don’t know it’s like bringing the canvas to life whereas like I feel like in a sense you can do that with paper and pen or like ink. But like when you can actually do it on the human canvas. It’s It’s insane so started doing that and they were like we see you your tattoo and you should swing by the shop and like I had’t mentioned anything about a job like working there full time cause they’re a ink therapy’s pretty good like they’ve always housed like 11 to 12 like artists at a time like they’ve. They’ve always been a busy busy shop. They’ve been around for like 25 years so all they kept telling me was to swing by so I out of a wing one day I you know I was at a job and I was down the street so I was like screw. It. Let’s swing by and see it. Fate has to hold and I walked in there.

22:45.53
Ren Nunez
And they were both in there and they basically offered me like a spot. A nice, really big spot and they were like hey man come back to right where you left off and you know we’ve got a ton of walk-in clientele which you know if you’re trying to try to build a clientele in the area. That’s what you need you need that walk-in traffic to get your name out there and they were like we’re so.

23:02.58
inkedway
Um.

23:04.27
Ren Nunez
Stuffed with walking traffic and all of our art. All their artists are booked out so give you a perfect opportunity to basically like feed you with the feeding tube a client tell us ah, stepped into that and it’s been a worldwin of like I don’t know just working hard and 1 opportunity after another. So. It’s been. Been pretty awesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah, right? Yeah exactly and like I was.

23:24.21
inkedway
Um, crazy that is a crazy story before dude walked into a loan with a message from God and told you what your life was um.

23:38.28
Ren Nunez
Pretty dead nuts set on sticking with blows like I loved working for that company like it was. It was a super cool environment. Um I don’t know they just treat you really well as like a company they do a lot and like I was I was like really set on just um, like I said I was working my way up trying to.

23:41.30

Ah, do I think what? Ah um I would say a lot before I was pretty. Ah. Was always just like angry. You know I mean cause I always had that sense of feeling like there’s gotta to be more There’s got to be more life than just like busting my ass like working overtime doing like all these hard manual labor jobs because it was always like you know it always seemed to be like hard manual labor jobs. There’s nothing ever easy and never got like a deskop like I was always lifting heavy glass since I was you know 14 when I started working at my family’s business and then at low is it was heavy lifting too. So I mean. I was I was always like dude. There’s gotta be, there’s no way like I’m just gonna run myself on the ground so I was always just like angry that mindset I was always just mad mad at the world. So I mean like honestly that didn’t really even change until ah I got to start doing this cause I was like dude, there’s no way like that. Still in you feel real. It feels like a dream like I know it’s been almost like a year of doing it. But it’s like dude it doesn’t like the craziest part is when you go from being angry and knowing what day of the week it is to like now you could ask me what day of the week is and I have to check because like I’m like I don’t know like but like.
